I am behind in posting, but I've been very busy lately! Here it is March already, but I will share a little about the January MATS Boot camp assignment because it was so fun.
The inspiration was Edwardian brooches.
I drew a bunch and experimented with pen and ink:
Then when we learned the assignment was to design a journal cover, I decided to make the brooch frames into picture frames of Boston Terriers. Since they were Edwardian brooches, I made the Terriers represent King Edward VII, his mom Queen Victoria, and two sisters (Victoria and Louise) and his brother, Alfred. Queen Victoria actually had nine children (!). In doing research, I read about what a mean, horrible mother she was to her children. She really resented them. So that was sad… I was planning on doing a back cover of the other four “children”, but I did not have time to do it, so I just did the cover.
This assignment was really fun, and it is soooo great and helpful to me to be able to create work just for myself. And I always learn something when I do this, and I think it ends up being my best work.
This is the final journal design that I created:
