My first class on Skillshare was just published, called Painting Inky Cats with Melissa Iwai! It was a fun mom/son bonding experience (OK, that might be a stretch!) this summer. My son, Jamie, filmed my demos, recorded the audio, edited the film, and created the music. In the lessons, I teach students how to use India ink and water to create paintings of cats.
I was drawn to the topic because I just LOVE drawing and painting cats! They often show up in my book illustrations, and I painted thirty one consecutive cats in India ink last year during the Inktober 2017 challenge last October.
I have been a member of Skillshare for several years now. I think I’m enrolled in over fifty classes! I’ve learned how to hand letter, how to create patterns and pattern collections, as well a whole slew of Photoshop and Illustrator hacks and techniques! Most recently, I’ve been learning about how to use Procreate and I encourage you to take my friend, Stephanie Fizer Coleman’s awesome classes on this topic!
In my Skillshare class, I do a brief overview of how to draw cats heads and bodies and then move onto teaching three painting techniques I like to use when employing ink.
I just love how ink is so spontaneous and unpredictable. You really have to work fast, but then you get interesting results you might not expect. It’s a feel that you can’t really get with a digital brush!
