I've been absent here because I've been so busy with work-- which is always a good thing! In June I had multiple projects so I was happy to be able to complete my June assignment for the MATS Bootcamp class I am taking! I did the whole thing in a couple of hours, which is really fast for me, but that's all the time I could spare. The goal was to create a piece of wall art using a nautical theme. For the mini assignment we were to draw ships in bottles and whales. Here are some of my sketches:
I had never created something like wall art before and was a little intimidated. I'm so used to thinking like a book illustrator. The diagram of the whale was interesting to me -- who knew they had a belly button!? It makes sense as they are mammals, but I had never really thought of it before. I also had fun looking around our neighborhood for interesting textures. I realized that the sidewalk tile in front of our building was a good candidate for murky sea water!
The color palette advice was to explore blues, so I did just that. I painted some blues in watercolor with my lovely Schmincke:
Then I scanned different elements into the computer and assembled in photoshop. I drew part of a rope drawing with a corner knot and duplicated it and put it together in Illustrator. Here is the final piece:
It's July already and I've finished the July assignment -- also a study in blue! Look out for it in a future post! :)
