This is what I've been drinking lately due to a horrible cold that doesn't seem to want to go away!
Amidst my illness, I have started on two new book projects and I'm finishing two others! It has been fun to start the new ones, and I'm very happy I got them. I was chosen based on my current work, which I'm so pleased about! One involves a lot of hand lettering, and the art director thought of me for the project because he really responded to my June MATS Bootcamp project! So that was a very happy surprise. :)
Meanwhile, I have also been plugging away at painting in my sketchbook every day. At first it was really hard, and a bit uncomfortable -- the sketchbook seemed so "precious", and I was also out of practice because I had stopped drawing from life for awhile. But I have been so, so, SO blown away and inspired by Jennifer Orkin Lewis (another MATS person!) and her AMAZING sketch paintings, that I wanted to challenge myself to do it myself. Just the act of doing something consistently, on a daily basis, spoke to me. Also, painting, rather than drawing was compelling, because it's something I feel I need to work on.
I was self-conscious at first, and I promised myself I wouldn't feel pressured to post anything, and I didn't for months. But recently, I got turned on to Instagram by my friend, Allyn Howard, and I've been posting my daily sketches there for the past two weeks!
After a month or so, I felt like I found my groove with the sketches. When I first started, the blank page seemed a bit intimidating. But after doing it every day no matter what, it becomes more like brushing one's teeth -- though much more enjoyable!
I've been doing a lot of street scenes -- whatever catches my eye in the neighborhood during the day. We don't own a car (you don't really need one in NYC) and walk everywhere, and even being a native Californian who got her driver's license on her 16th birthday, I have to say, I prefer it! There is so much to see all around! And I find that since I've been on the look out for possible topics to sketch, I am more aware of my surroundings and of the beauty found in every day life. I love the colors, I love the people, the different faces, the different clothes, the different attitudes!
If you are interested in keeping up with my sketches, you can follow me here!
Also, if you keep a daily sketchbook, let me know, and I would love to see your work! :)
